Groups had announced plans to meet at the school as part of a citywide walkout marking the date and “three years of the unconscionable US-funded genocide against the people of Gaza.”
Organizers included Nidal, a Palestinian liberation organization in Seattle.
On the morning of October 7, 2023, Hamas and affiliated Palestinian militants launched a coordinated surprise assault breaching the border barrier between Gaza and southern Israel. Israel declared war.
In the three years since, the conflict has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people, including over 74,000 Palestinians in Gaza, approximately 1,200 people killed in Israel during the initial Hamas-led attacks, and more than 800 Israeli soldiers in subsequent fighting, according to international bodies and official authorities.
The Wednesday march involving dozens of demonstrators was reported blocking Broadway and Denny around 1:30 PM.
By 2 PM, the Seattle Police Department reported the march had concluded as the demonstration continued at Seattle Central.
Several reports of tagging and vandalism were made around the area including near the march and at area businesses and buildings across Capitol Hill.
SPD said it had identified suspects in some of the reported vandalism near the march and rally and was waiting to make arrests “when it is safe to do so.”
SPD reports one person has been arrested for theft.
The King County Sheriff helicopter unit Guardian One was monitoring the area and circling nearby streets through the afternoon. It was also helping to track a suspect in a reportedly unrelated search. We’re asking for more details from the county.
