Station 25 battles two Capitol Hill building fires

Capitol Hill’s Fire Station 25 had a busy Friday including responses to two building fires that left one structure heavily damaged while Seattle Fire’s quick response limited damage to the roof of the second.

In the first incident just after 11:30 AM, multiple 911 callers reported a fire on the upper story of the small 1922-era building in the 600 block of 12th Ave E near Mercer.

According to Seattle Fire and radio updates, crews arrived to find fire and smoke spreading in the upper floor and attic space from a unit closet. The incident was escalated and crews set about slowing the fire’s spread with hand-lines until a hydrant supply could be established.

Seattle Fire reported that crews had to rip open walls to reach the “void space fire.”

The stubborn fire was reported out nearly an hour later.

There were no reported injuries and Seattle Fire was able to keep flames from spreading to adjacent structures.

The building suffered heavy damage in the response. According to county records, the building includes eight residential units.

Seattle Fire was investigating a cause and official damage estimate.

Later Friday, crews responded to a residential fire in a townhome structure in the 400 block of 14th Ave E near Republican.

Crews were called to the roof fire just after 5 PM and began battling the fire atop one of two townhome structures in the development.

Firefighters were able to quickly knock the roof blaze down and stop the fire before it spread.

The fire was declared under control after around only 10 minutes.

There were no reported injuries.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
