The 2026 Seattle Blue Angels schedule has some changes but you can still expect buzzing Super Hornets over Capitol Hill

The U.S. Navy Blue Angels return to Seattle’s skies this week for the annual Boeing Seafair Air Show, bringing precision flyovers, roaring Super Hornets, and the annual debate over public expenditure and environmental impacts, with a renewed focus on safety across Seattle’s central neighborhoods.

This year’s 80th-anniversary tour brings key operational changes to the fleet. Missing from the sky is “Fat Albert,” the team’s iconic C-130J Super Hercules support aircraft, which is sidelined for the entire 2026 airshow season while undergoing major center wing box replacement and life-extending maintenance in Cambridge, England.

The Seattle performances also come just weeks after an incident in Pensacola Beach, Florida, where a low-altitude pass by a Blue Angels F/A-18 Super Hornet generated enough jet wash to blow beach chairs, umbrellas, and tents across the sand. While Navy leadership acknowledged the pass as unsafe, no pilots were grounded and the team was cleared to maintain its airshow schedule over Seattle where flight paths are governed by FAA “aerobatic box” buffers over Lake Washington.

Behind the aerial spectacle sits a massive financial footprint. The Navy’s demonstration fleet carries a total asset value exceeding $700 million, supported by an annual operating budget of roughly $40 million funded through federal defense appropriations.

The annual event’s return to Seattle continues to draw recurring scrutiny over its environmental and community impacts. The fleet consumes over 70,000 gallons of jet fuel across Seafair weekend, releasing an estimated 650 to 670 metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

In addition to carbon emissions, peak engine noise reaching 110 decibels creates disruption across central neighborhoods like Capitol Hill and the Central District and poses challenges for pets, young children, and residents with sensory sensitivities or PTSD.

Flight operations begin mid-week as jets touch down at Boeing Field, leading into scheduled Thursday practice sessions. Main airshow performances run Friday, July 31 through Sunday, August 2, with the jet formation taking to the sky at approximately 3:15 PM each afternoon.
