District 3 rep responds to neighborhood construction headaches

District 3 representative Joy Hollingsworth says her office is pushing for “better coordination, earlier communication, and clear updates on detours and timelines” on neighborhood street and construction projects.

“I know major construction projects come with real pain points,” Hollingsworth writes in a newsletter update to constituents. “Street closures, traffic changes, noise, access issues, and disruptions to small businesses can take a toll, and communication has not always been as clear or consistent as it should be.”

The message comes amid complaints from nearby businesses about construction projects limiting access for residents and visitors in two D3 areas. CHS reported here on the reopening of 12th and Pike to traffic after a longer than expected sewer overhaul. Community outrage hasn’t cooled in Leschi where merchants lobbied to postpone the $7.9 million overhaul of Seattle Parks and Recreation’s Leschi South Marina. This fall’s delayed start of construction has generated a new round of complaints.

Hollingsworth also lists the ongoing RapidRide J work that has torn apart Eastlake streets and the state’s continuing 520 expansion, lid, and new Portage Bay Bridge project as neighborhood transportation and transit headaches while encouraging residents to visit area businesses impacted by the work.

Work around the Garfield High School campus also continues where the $11 million Garfield Super Block project is moving toward completion.

The Hollingsworth office, meanwhile, has turned to social media for making most of its updates to constituents with the third-year city legislator posting around two to three times a week on Instagram at @cmjoyhollings.
