During the first months of the pandemic, chef Jose Mendoza Gallegos stepped out of the kitchen to take over ownership of Americana and save the Broadway diner from becoming yet another COVID-19 food and drink loss on Capitol Hill.
Six years later, the chef has made a deal to put Americana in new hands ready to continue its tradition of all-day breakfast and brunch whatever day of the week you feel like it.
The 200 block Broadway E restaurant at the front of the Broadway Alley complex announced the new ownership last week:
Americana Restaurant is excited to announce that we are entering a new chapter under new management! We look forward to continuing to serve great food and warm hospitality
The new ownership includes Seattle dining veteran Chuy Mendoza Gamillo who worked as a longtime line cook in Americana’s kitchen.
The transaction is the second in recent weeks for a longtime Broadway eatery. CHS reported here on new owners at 2010-born Pinto Thai.
Americana was born in 2011 when the previous ownership sold Table 219 to Jeffrey Wilson, their chef eager to launch his own concept. Wilson had been at the restaurant since joining at the end of its days as El Greco where the power of brunch filled tables every weekend.
After taking over, Wilson rebooted the restaurant as Americana and dedicated the menu to a creative take on American comfort food with an every-day brunch schedule. That spirit more or less lives on today. American is open every day 9 AM to 3 PM. And, yes, brunch is still available every day.
Inside the Broadway Alley, Capitol Hill food and drink legends Tacos Chukis and Taneda continue to draw loyal patrons. Neighbor Sumo Express shares the alley street front with Americana.
There have been no updates, meanwhile, on whether fast food giant McDonald’s is still sizing up a space on the block. That’s OK. In addition to “pancakes of the day,” french toast, or the Americana Benedict, you can also get an Americana burger. In addition to breakfast classics, you will also find specials like chilaquiles on the menu.
Americana is located at 219 Broadway E. Get updates at @americanaseattle.
