Brunch is back at Capitol Hill’s only queer dinosaur eatery, Saint John’s

We are still clawing back some of the things we lost in the pandemic. Saint John’s — Capitol Hill’s only queer dinosaur eatery — is doing brunch again.

Part of the neighborhood since the Pike/Pine Paleolithic era when it debuted in February 2012, Saint John’s holds down a storied spot in Capitol Hill food and drink where the Rosebud reigned previously for 17 years.

Co-owner Michael Lee tells CHS the return of brunch service kicked off this week with DJs and dinosaur coloring books and crayons.

“Our menu features a parade of hits, including the Deluxe Biscuit Sammy, Horchata Custard Brioche French Toast, and the return of our beloved Jolene, Jolene—fried chicken on a housemade biscuit with a heavy drizzle of habanero honey,” Lee writes. “While the pandemic forced us to temporarily (ahem) pause brunch, we are humbled and thrilled to finally welcome you back.”

CHS last visited Saint John’s in 2018 as eatery said it was making a statement with a giant, dinosaur mural by artist Craig Cundiff on the bar’s interior wall. “I think we should fully commit to being this queer, dinosaur eatery,” Lee reportedly said at the time. “It’s absurd. That’s the point.”

“The world is a dark place right now,” Lee said. “If we can provide one moment in time for people to escape the news… That’s the goal.”

And this was before the pandemic and the current administration.

Saint John’s dinosaurs and restored brunch service are even more needed today.

Saint John’s is located at 719 E Pike. You can learn more at saintjohnsseattle.com.
