- Let’s Go Washington opposition: The Seattle City Council will consider a resolution Tuesday afternoon opposing statewide Let’s Go Washington anti-trans public school and youth sports initiatives on the ballot for voters this November. Sponsored by Councilmembers Alexis Mercedes Rinck and Dionne Foster, the proposed council resolution urges voters to reject the initiatives. Initiative 001 seeks to restore parental rights measures regarding public school curriculum review, record access, and parental notifications for student health services while Initiative 638 proposes prohibiting transgender girls from participating in girls’ school sports and instituting biological sex verification requirements for student athletes. The proposed council resolution opposes the measures for stripping student privacy protections by requiring schools to disclose students’ gender identity or sexual orientation to parents. Approval by voters would also bar transgender girls from girls’ K–12 athletics while mandating medical sex verification physicals. The resolution proposal cites severe risks to the mental health, privacy, and physical safety of LGBTQIA+ youth.
- Broadway Business Improvement Area: The council is set to approve legislation modernizing the assessment structure for the Broadway Business Improvement Area for the first time in over two decades to fund neighborhood clean-up, public safety, and promotion initiatives. CHS reported here on the passage of the bill out of committee. The plan will raise the district’s maximum annual rate from $3,500 to $5,000, expanding its current approximate $200,000 a year budget before adding a recurring $200 annual increase starting in 2032. During the session, the BBIA’s longtime administrator Egan Orion told the council’s Human Services, Labor, and Economic Development Committee chair Alexis Mercedes Rinck that the change is much needed — and could be the next step in an even more impactful upgrade to the neighborhood clean-up and promotion organization’s finances, saying that the BBIA and city officials are exploring “a property-based model or establishing a brand-new BIA and sunsetting this particular model,” as property-based assessments “are more sustainable than B&O-based assessments.”
- Gun violence intervention contract: The full council will vote on a resolution stating its support for a new gun violence intervention partnership. A bill introduced last week and passed out of committee to protect consensual non-monogamy and diverse relationship structures is on the table for the full council. City Councilmember Maritza Rivera’sproposed resolution has been watered down from committing the city to a new contract with the National Network for Safe Communities research center. Under the Rivera proposal, the city council would commit its support to establishing a two-year partnership, putting the ball in Mayor Katie Wilson’s court. Backers say cities like Oakland, New Orleans, and Baltimore have leveraged the framework by pairing targeted law enforcement against the small network of individuals driving the violence with dedicated social services, intensive outreach, and community-led moral pressure. Under the resolution, Seattle would spend just under $420,000 on a two-year technical assistance and consulting contract. The downstream costs are also substantial including funding social services like emergency housing, treatment, and job stipends, staffing dedicated street outreach workers and case managers, and covering increased law enforcement costs.
- Pansexual, asexual, and consensual non-monogamous protections: Tuesday.’s agenda includes legislation to protect consensual non-monogamy and diverse relationship structures. The bill from Councilmember Alexis Mercedes Rinck would extend civil rights protections in Seattle in areas such as housing and employment to individuals who are pansexual, asexual, or in consensual non-monogamous relationships, while also extending protections to those in multigenerational households. The protections apply to employment, housing, public accommodations, business licensing, park access, and policing policies enforced by the Seattle Office for Civil Rights. Employers would not have to expand benefits like health insurance, leave, or other compensation perks.
- Seattle’s Domestic Workers Ordinance update: The council will take up a bill amending Seattle’s Domestic Workers Ordinance, expanding protections to conform with state law and Domestic Workers Standards Board recommendations by requiring written agreements, hiring entity record retention, permissible leave retaliation protections, advance termination notice (two weeks, or four for live-in workers), and aligned civil enforcement remedies.
