Seattle Fire was called to the 1912-era Olympian Apartments in the 1600 block of E Madison just after 5:15 AM to reports of flames coming from a lower floor of the six-story structure and its distinctive terra cotta cladding.
Crews reported the fire under control about 15 minutes later but were working to remove smoke from the upper floors of the building.
SFD said that crews were able to contain the blaze before it damaged any additional areas of the building.
There were no reported injuries.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
According to the city’s database of historic properties, the “Beaux Arts – Neoclassical”-style building is worthy of landmarks status but not yet under protection of the ordinance.
