Garfield High School United Nations joins Seattle school walkout against ICE
Garfield High School students were part of a protest against ICE that drew hundreds for a march to Seattle City Hall as part of a day of walkouts Thursday.
The GHS United Nations coalition of student clubs helped organize the protest.
“This demonstration is paired with action. For example, students are working to materially support Garfield’s large immigrant community, collecting food for Fundación Corazon, so that Garfield’s large immigrant community is materially supported,” Kian Naeemi told CHS about the demonstration.
In a message to parents, Seattle Public Schools said it is doing its best to accommodate First Amendment rights while also keeping class on schedule.
“We want to be clear that Seattle Public Schools is not sponsoring, promoting, or organizing these events,” the message reads. “These activities are student‑initiated and not connected to classroom instruction.”
“During walkouts, schools will maintain a regular schedule for all students who remain on campus,” the notice reads. “Teaching and learning will continue uninterrupted, and staff will provide instruction and learning activities as usual. Our schools remain closed campuses during the instructional day.”
The Seattle Medium has more on Thursday’s student walkouts.
