Celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day on Monday, Oct. 12, with a viewing of a new documentary film, “UNRECOGNIZED: The Duwamish Tribe,” at the Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center.

The 30-minute film shares the story of the Duwamish people, the original inhabitants of Seattle, and their ongoing struggle for federal legal recognition as a tribe. Historian David Buege has described the Duwamish loss of tribal land and sovereignty as “Seattle’s original sin.”

The film will be followed by a question-and-answer session with documentary filmmaker B.J. Bullert, who produced the film, and her husband Ken Workman, a Duwamish Tribal Council member and former president of Duwamish Tribal Services. He is a fifth-generation grandson of Chief Seattle.

The program, sponsored by the Care for Creation Ministry of the West Seattle Catholic Community, will be 7-9 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Duwamish Longhouse, 4705 West Marginal Way SW. A $10 donation to support the tribe and distribution of the film is requested. Refreshments will be provided.
