Twenty-one years of cafe culture on Capitol Hill’s quiet side will continue. There are new plans for the old Fuel Coffee on 19th Ave E.

The new project arrives as Fuel’s family of Seattle cafes centered around 15th Ave E’s Ada’s Technical Books is coming to an end.

Ada’s owner announced this spring she was stepping away from the coffee and retail business to spend more time with family. Danielle and David Hulton were behind the 15th Ave E coffee bar Saturday morning for the shop’s final hours of service.

For now, Ada’s will sit quiet on 15th Ave E while the adjoining coworking space stays busy.

The Ada’s Fuel Coffee cousins are making new plans with the Hultons’ exit from the cafe business.

On 19th Ave E, a neighbor is moving in. Neighborhood resident Julia Reid and business partner Mara Patton are teaming up on a new project for the cafe space that has hosted a coffee shop since Fuel first debuted there more than 20 years ago.

Inkling Art & Cafe will bring “creativity, curiosity, and coffee” to this stretch of 19th Ave E alongside neighborhood gallery AMcE Creative Arts as it comes up on its fifth anniversary on the street.

Seattle food, drink, and grocery entrepreneur Dani Cone opened the cafe on 19th Ave E in 2005 as the first in what would become a small Seattle chain of cafes. Her original Cone and Steiner market still serves the neighborhood a block down 19th.

For now, the Montlake Fuel continues as the last of its kind with the 24th Ave E spot also on the lookout for a buyer. In the meantime, you can stop in for coffee and weekend courtyard book sales.

We’ll have more on the plans for Inkling on 19th Ave E and what’s next for Ada’s and the Montlake Fuel cafe soon.

Inkling Art & Cafe is “coming soon” to 610 19th Ave E. Learn more at inklingartcafe.com.
