City Council resolution declares Seattle ‘a basketball city’

Whereas Seattle never got over the loss of the Sonics, Tuesday its city council approved a resolution declaring the 13th largest media market in the country “ready for an NBA team” and “affirming Seattle is a basketball city.”

“The City of Seattle is committed to ensuring that the return of the Seattle SuperSonics aligns with broader community priorities, including equitable access to play, community development opportunity, workforce development, youth engagement, and impacts in underserved communities,” the resolution reads.

The off-court move comes as NBA’s board of governors has authorized expansion talks with ownership groups in Las Vegas and Seattle.

In 2008, the NBA approved the sale of the Seattle SuperSonics to investors who moved the team to Oklahoma City in a dispute over public funding for a new arena and upgrades for what was then known as KeyArena.

Seattle officials including Mayor Katie Wilson say the privately funded $1.15 billion rebuilding of Climate Pledge Arena is the center of Seattle’s bid for a new team.
