La Dive adds Chiew Chiew by Sugar Hill, a Pike and Pine pairing of wine, Thai street food and bar snacks

Capitol Hill natural wine bar La Dive is pairing Pike and Pine as it turns to a neighbor for help in the kitchen. The hook-up brings easy access to great food at La Dive while also showcasing the creations of an under appreciated neighborhood Thai joint.

The E Pike wine and bubbly night spot is launching Chiew Chiew by Sugar Hill, a new culinary collaboration with the Thai street food restaurant and lounge from just around the corner on E Pine.

Guests at La Dive can order Thai street food and Asian bar snacks like dumplings, noodles, rice dishes, and fries from their tables via QR code with dishes delivered lickety split from Sugar Hill’s kitchen just a block and then some away. The route from the E Pine Thai joint to La Dive is just over 1,000 feet.

The Pike and Pine partnership unites three female entrepreneurs: La Dive co-owners Kate Opatz and Anaïs Custer alongside Sugar Hill owner Guitar Srisuthiamorn. Designed to support women-owned neighborhood businesses amid a challenging hospitality landscape, the concept pairs natural wines and frozen cocktails with a full food menu in what is hoped to be a mutually beneficial experience for the ventures — and for customers.

Now a veteran of the Capitol Hill hospitality scene, Opatz has been increasingly vocal about the real challenges of running a successful restaurant and bar business in the neighborhood and a champion of women nightlife entrepreneurs. One of the latest projects she has boosted is the soon to open “agave spirit forward” Bar Laa from first-time owner Laara Garcia in a former Opatz space on E Olive Way.

Sugar Hill debuted in 2016 in the one-time Bauhaus and Capitol Club space but really hit its stride with a refocus on dining coming out of the pandemic in 2021. “We dumbed down our food when we first came. Here I try to create a menu where it’s gonna be spicy, but we use authentic ingredients and make it taste like home,” Srisuthiamorn said at the time. “I love all the food that comes out. They’re my favorite dishes that I grew up with. I want people to come in and taste what we have to offer that’s not watered down Thai food.”

La Dive, meanwhile, was born in 2019 and has settled in as a dark and cozy hangout featuring a mix of affordable and interesting natural wine and bubbly pours plus a bottle shop.

Chiew Chiew by Sugar Hill runs every night at La Dive with the exception of Mondays which feature guest chef pop-ups. Sugar Hill continues its own operations on E Pine as well, featuring late-night food and live DJ sets Thursday through Saturday.
