March snow falls on Capitol Hill — UPDATES

Thanks to Daniel from the CHS Facebook Group for this photo from Cal Anderson this morning

We have had a few Snowbruaries on Capitol Hill but not a lot of snowy Marches. Friday morning, the peaks of the Hill woke up to a few inches of dense, wet snow. Rising temperatures were keeping streets mostly clear and making it likely the rest of the day would mix in more rain with the flakes.

The National Weather Service was predicting little to no accumulation from the mix through the day with temperatures likely to stick in the 30s.

Impact from the cold and wet weather has so far not been a big problem for getting around and there have been no reports of wide disruption to services like electricity and internet. Metro has not announced any issues or snow routes.

Area schools have also not announced any late bells or adjusted schedules.

Traffic is reported slowed and heavy on hilly stretches like E Union, E John, and E Aloha. You can view area traffic cameras here on the SDOT travelers map.

A large tree was reported down and blocking the road in the 600 block of 20th Ave E.

February snow is a relatively common occurrence on Capitol Hill including some snowfall last year and the last great Snowbruary storm in 2021. As for March, Seattle saw a small amount of snow fall in the third month of 2024 — but it didn’t warrant a CHS report. Snow also fell in March of 2020 and 2019.

The bout of cold weather comes in what has been a dismal year for snow in the area’s mountains with snowpack running at just 53% of its median before this week.
