Mayor’s pick to lead Seattle’s Office of Sustainability & Environment confirmed
The Seattle City Council has confirmed Mayor Katie Wilson’s pick to head the Office of Sustainability & Environment.
Tuesday, the council approved the selection of Lylianna Allala to lead the $33.4 million, 55-employee department responsible for developing and implementing citywide environmental policies.
In the report (PDF) from the mayor’s office for her appointment, Allala is described as a seasoned public sector executive with over six years of leadership at the City of Seattle’s Office of Sustainability and Environment where she has served as Interim Director, Deputy Director, and the city’s inaugural Climate Justice Director.
Her portfolio includes leading the citywide implementation of Seattle’s Green New Deal and the Equity & Environment Initiative, as well as managing multimillion-dollar environmental justice grant programs.
Before joining OSE, Allala shaped climate and environmental policy as an Outreach & Policy Coordinator for Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal and managed national diversity initiatives for the Environmental Leadership Program.
Wilson tabbed Allala to start the year as she overhauled City Hall after taking office.
““I am immensely proud to lead this department of passionate people who have dedicated themselves to implementing innovative policies and programs that meet community needs and improve quality of life through clean air and water, healthy forests and trees, access to fresh foods, and inclusive pathways to careers that help Seattle reduce emissions and become more climate resilient,” Allala said in a statement earlier this year. “Caring for the environment must begin with caring for one another.”
