There were no reported injuries but a bullet reportedly entered a building and was found in a seventh floor hallway in a burst of Friday gun violence that moved across the core of the Central District Friday night.
Emergency dispatch received a flood of calls about the shooting that began just before 11:30 PM with gunfire Friday night across from the Garfield Teen Life Center and Garfield High School. The center is open until midnight on Fridays and was reportedly placed into lockdown during the incident.
According to East Precinct radio updates, police blocked off the intersection of E Jefferson and 23rd Ave to investigate one scene. According to the dispatch audio, officers confirmed gunshots had been fired and witnesses reported hearing at least two separate bursts of gunfire that sounded like two multiple shooters exchanging gunfire.
A resident living on the seventh floor of an apartment building several blocks north in the 1100 block of 23rd Ave called 911 after finding a bullet lying in the hallway outside their door.
Callers also reported seeing a large black SUV parked near 22nd and James shortly before the shooting. Three people reportedly ran from the vehicle into the nearby field near the center and the school. Immediately after the shots rang out, the caller said the group ran back to the SUV and sped away.
Police say officers located damage to a fence, and 39 spent bullet casings at that scene.
