There has been another death on the roadways around Seattle’s busy Yesler corridor. CHS has learned that the 72-year-old struck by a driver while crossing the street in a morning June 13th collision at Boren and Main has died of his injuries.

The Medical Examiner’s office has identified the victim as Raphael Shelton. Shelton died earlier this week after suffering “blunt force injuries” nine days earlier in the Saturday morning crash.

The deadly crash marks the second deadly incident on streets in the area this month. Bicyclist Christian Salyer was struck and killed by a recycling truck two blocks away at 12th and Yesler.on June 1st.

The area near Bailey Gatzert Elementary School includes the busy convergence of traffic along major thoroughfares including 12th Ave, Yesler, Boren, and Broadway.

According to the Seattle Police Department, Shelton was struck in a collision involving a Volkswagen Jetta just after 10 AM that Saturday:

Officers arrived as SFD was treating the unconscious pedestrian. The pedestrian was struck while crossing Boren Avenue South. SFD informed officers on scene that the pedestrian had significant injuries and it was unknown if he will regain consciousness. An SPD Drug Recognition Expert responded to the scene and determined no driver impairment. TCIS was screened of the incident.

Northbound Boren was closed to traffic during the response and investigation.

Shelton was taken to Harborview but died just over a week later.

Meanwhile, the victim in another recent road death has also been identified. The Medical Examiner says Christopher Turk was the driver who died after veering in front of a dump truck in a June 10th collision near Garfield High School. Turk was 63 and is remembered as a father and grandfather.
