The Seattle Police Department says Daniel Carlee remained at the scene at Pine and Belmont and was one of the multiple 911 callers who reported the just before 10:30 PM shooting. “That was me. This guy was punching me and shit,” police say Carlee told the 911 operator.
Carlee, 41, remains held but has not been charged in the case.
The man police say Carlee shot was hit multiple times and died at the scene. Police recovered eight shell casings on scene. Three fired bullets were recovered, “two of
which were underneath the body of the victim,” according to the report on the killing.
The victim has not been publicly identified pending investigation by the medical examiner.
According to police, witnesses described a fight in the street involving a black male and a white male in a heated altercation:
All five witnesses were interviewed by Detectives and all provided similar accounts to what occurred. Witnesses relayed that about 15 minutes prior to the shooting, Carlee was heard telling the victim, ‘This is the second time.’ Carlee then told the victim, ‘Get out of here, you are a child molester.’ The victim walked away from Carlee and appeared to be leaving the area. Carlee produced a flashlight that was described as very bright. He shined the flashlight into the eyes of the victim repeatedly and then toward his waistband area. One witness attempted to de-escalate the situation by telling the victim to leave. This witness also asked Carlee if ‘everything was okay’ and Carlee replied, ‘I’m going to shoot him.’
Witnesses told police the white male suspect later identified as Carlee “produced a sharp instrument” and began stabbing it toward the other man:
The victim then closed the distance and threw 3-5 punches toward Carlee’s head. None of the witnesses believed that any of the punches landed or were effective. In response, Carlee had his hands up in a boxing stance and may have thrown a punch or two or he may have been defending himself. As the victim attempted his last effort at a punch, Carlee produced a gun from his person and ‘immediately’ shot the victim one or two times. The victim ‘immediately’ fell to the ground and there was a short pause in the gunshots.
“Carlee then fired additional rounds at the victim as he lay on the ground,” the police report reads. “Witnesses reported hearing 3-6 shots in this second volley of gunfire.”
Saturday, Carlee was ordered held on $2 million bail for investigation of Murder in the Second Degree. The King County Prosecutor’s office says it expects to be able to make a charging decision in the case next week.
Carlee, a Seattle resident, has no previous serious criminal record in King County.
Police say Carlee was taken into custody four minutes after the shooting without incident. A 9mm Glock handgun registered to the suspect was found on the sidewalk. Police say Carlee holds a concealed pistol license. Police say a knife was also recovered from Carlee’s front pocket.
