Police: Tacoma teen fired off nine shots as security tried to break up fight in triple shooting outside Pike/Pine club
A scene of the aftermath from a video that captured the 1:10 AM shooting
New details have been revealed in the Monday morning E Pike shooting outside a Capitol Hill nightclub that sent three people to the hospital last week including new details about the 19-year-old suspect arrested in a SWAT raid on a Broadway apartment building Friday afternoon.
Police say the teen is from Tacoma and had been previously arrested in a firearm case just weeks before the shooting.
The new information comes from the first Seattle Police Department report on the fight and shooting included in court documents as a King County Superior Court judge found probable cause over the weekend to hold the suspect on investigation of three counts of first degree assault.
The victims in the shooting are recovering including at least one shot in the abdomen and wrist who remains hospitalized.
Police said one of the people injured was involved in the fight while the other two people hit were bystanders.
The SPD report says officers collected nine 9 MM shells at the shooting scene just west of the club’s entrance.
CHS reported here on the 1:10 AM Monday morning shooting in which three people were shot during an altercation in front of the Cultura nightclub. Club ownership credited its newly hired security firm with trying to peacefully resolve the altercation and helping to make sure people were safe in the aftermath of the gunfire.
Police were able to immediately identify the gunman thanks to security video from the club that captured the altercation on the sidewalk and that the 19-year-old had been arrested in Seattle just two weeks prior for illegal possession of a firearm, the report says.
According to the report, the suspect was easy to recognize due to his stature — the report notes the 19-year-old stands only 5’6″.
According to police radio updates the night of the shooting, the suspect was identified by officers but was not immediately located.
Video taken from a building across the street showed a physical fight between two groups with club security attempting to intervene before a series of gunshots.
SPD’s review of Cultura security video described a similar scene:
RTCC video 001, starts playing at 1:09 AM, with XXX punching someone outside Cultura. It appears security is trying to keep people separated. A group of three males, including XXX walk away westbound. Then XXX runs back and is seen trying to get past security at a subject wearing a white do rag, later identified as victim XXXX. It looks like XXX and XXXX exchange some words and possible punches.
One other subject XXX is with, also gets involved. The security of Cultura manages to separate the group and begin walking XXX and the two people he is with, west, away from the club. XXXX, follows and appears to be yelling at XXX.
As Cultura security is pushing XXX and his group away from Cultura, XXX pulls out a gun, gets into a two-handed shooting stance, and fires.
The report does not include details about how the suspect was later tracked to a nearby apartment building. CHS reported here on Friday’s SWAT operation in the development above Capitol Hill Station in which the suspect was taken into custody.
According to the SPD report, the suspect was arrested inside a third floor unit of the Connection on Broadway building.
The suspected teen shooter is now behind bars on $1.5 million bail. A spokesperson for the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s office says they expect to be able to make a charging decision in the case later this week.
The family of one of the victims, meanwhile, is seeking the community’s help with medical expenses.
