Prep for ‘The Big One’ at this weekend’s Urban Survival Skills Fair in Volunteer Park

Knowing what to do when the grid goes down or the ground starts shaking is essential, but preparing for a major earthquake does not have to be a solo effort. This Sunday, August 16, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, the North Capitol Hill unit of Seattle Emergency Hubs and the Capitol Hill Community Council are hosting the Urban Survival Skills Fair in Volunteer Park, located right next to the iconic Black Sun sculpture.

The free, outdoor event focuses on practical, neighbor-to-neighbor disaster preparedness. Organizers will walk attendees through essential survival skills across several hands-on topics:

• Utility & Home Safety: Identifying and handling natural gas leaks safely.
• Basic Needs: Maintaining food, heat, light, and water supply when power and utilities fail, as well as water storage and sterilization.
• Communications & Rescue: Locating open hospitals and pharmacies without working cell networks, plus teamwork strategies for freeing trapped individuals.
• Sanitation: Practical solutions for post-disaster emergency toilet and waste management.

Designed for all ages, the fair emphasizes building community resilience before a disaster strikes. Mark your calendar and drop by Volunteer Park this Sunday to meet your neighbors and pick up essential life-saving skills.
