Seattle City Council to vote on Office of Police Accountability director

The Seattle City Council will meet Wednesday to confirm the appointment of Bonnie Glenn as the city’s director of the Office of Police Accountability.

Glenn has led the office in an interim capacity since the resignation of Gino Betts a year ago after criticism of his handling of the investigation into former Chief Adrian Diaz and his relationship with a chief of staff.

Diaz was finally terminated last year after a long investigation documented Diaz’s sexual relationship with a woman he hired and the lies the then-chief of police told to cover his tracks.

Glenn was previously an administrative law judge with the Washington State Office of Administrative Hearings.

The director of the Office of Police Accountability heads the complaint process around Seattle Police Department misconduct and directs the OPA investigative process including certifying findings and recommendation discipline.

The office directors typically serves for four years.

Glenn will work with new Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes who began his leadership of the department this year.

“The resounding feedback from the involved stakeholders was that Bonnie’s leadership has been a stabilizing force for the Office of Police Accountability – and she should be empowered to continue the good work she has done and to move OPA into the future,” Mayor Bruce Harrell wrote in his letter to the council about the appointment. “She is an ethical, kind, and productive leader with a proven history of demonstrating results, and I am proud to appoint her into this incredibly important role.”
