As it faces concerns over increased federal immigration enforcement, Seattle has a new Special Advisor on Immigrant and Refugee Affairs. The city announced the appointment of Abdi Jama to the role.
Mayor Katie Wilson’s office described Jama as a “nationally respected leader” with over 20 years of experience strengthening institutions and expanding access to justice for immigrant families across Washington State.
Jama previously served as program director of Catholic Immigration Legal Services where he led a team providing legal aid to thousands of individuals annually. His leadership was noted for expanding removal defense capacity and strengthening services for vulnerable populations. According to the city’s announcement, Jama has been a “key architect” in improving coordination between government institutions and community-based organizations.
In his new capacity, Jama will work with Wilson and city departments to ensure immigrant communities remain central to Seattle’s “growth, resilience, and shared prosperity.”
