The Seattle Public Safety Survey” process run by a Seattle University research effort is underway again this year.

The Seattle Police Department says it has used the annual process to help shape its approach to policing specific communities and neighborhoods in the city.

CHS reported on recent results for the East Precinct including Capitol Hill and the Central District that highlighted concerns around traffic safety and police capacity over more typical public safety worries.

Jacqueline Helfgott, professor and director of the Crime & Research Center at Seattle University and coordinator SPD’s survey process, has also found that ratings of the Seattle Police Department have dropped following the Black Lives Matter protests in the city and the department’s decision to abandon the East Precinct and stop policing nearby areas during CHOP. Helfgott says the department’s ratings were above the national average prior to 2020.
