Seattle Public Schools proposes closures again – including at least one in West Seattle
Seattle Public Schools superintendent Ben Shuldiner said earlier this year that he wouldn’t rule out school closures, and it appears he meant it. In notes this afternoon to families of at least six schools – two in West Seattle – “consolidation” was proposed, meaning potential closures. In West Seattle, the district is again proposing closing Sanislo Elementary on Puget Ridge and merging it into Highland Park Elementary. One parent who fought the potential closure of Sanislo two years ago tells WSB, “We are shocked and upset — we were not consulted at all.” Here’s the letter sent to the two West Seattle schools’ families:
Dear Sanislo and Highland Park Families,
We warmly invite you to join us on Monday, November 16, 2026, from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m., for a family conversation with Superintendent Shuldiner regarding the proposed merger of Sanislo and Highland Park for the 2027-2028 school year.
We recognize that this proposal may bring questions, concerns, and many different emotions for families in both school communities. This conversation is an opportunity to come together, hear information, ask questions, share your perspectives, and begin building connections with one another.
This work is currently in Phase 1, focused on listening, learning, and gathering feedback. No decisions have been made. Your voices, experiences, and perspectives are important as we begin these conversations.

The same template was used for the notes received by families of the four other (non-WS) schools with similar proposals, Sacajawea and John Rogers (having a district-convened meeting December 4) and Licton Springs and Salmon Bay K-8 (December 11 meeting). It’s been two years since the district briefly considered a closure plan.
