Slow down: Seattle announces four new speed camera locations for 2027

Seattle is set to install 24/7 speed safety cameras across four high-risk corridors in 2027 as part of Mayor Katie Wilson’s renewed Vision Zero initiative to eliminate traffic fatalities

The city identified four one-mile stretches with persistent speeding and severe crash histories. Officials will narrow the selections down to specific block locations in the coming months:

• Rainier Ave S: Northbound between S Holgate St and S Jackson St
• Rainier Ave S: Between S Norfolk St and 51st Ave S
• E Marginal Way S: Between S Fidalgo St and Diagonal Ave S
• Sand Point Way NE: Between NE 74th St and Matthews Ave NE

City data shows that 15% of drivers on these corridors travel at least 10 mph over the posted speed limit.

Planners selected the sites using collision data, foot and bike traffic volumes, and the City’s Racial and Social Equity Index to prioritize critical danger zones while avoiding an over-concentration of enforcement in historically disadvantaged communities.

These four corridors represent the opening phase of a wider rollout that will deploy up to 10 automated speed cameras across Seattle by early 2029.

Seattle relies on a slowly growing system of automated photo enforcement, operating speed-safety cameras across 37 school zones that monitor traffic when warning beacons flash during arrival and departure hours. In addition to school-zone speed tracking, the city’s traffic-camera network includes red-light enforcement at 23 intersections, automated cameras along six transit-only bus lanes, and seven “block the box” camera systems designed to keep crosswalks and intersections clear of stopped vehicles.
