Muslim Americans in key swing states are launching a campaign against President Joe Biden, largely over his backing of Israel during the war in Gaza.
While Biden has taken flak from both sides over his handling of the war, Muslim Americans have been particularly vocal. Now, Muslim leaders from Michigan, Minnesota, Arizona, Wisconsin, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, and Pennsylvania are scheduled to meet in Dearborn, Michigan, to turn their opposition into action through an anti-Biden campaign dubbed #AbandonBiden.
“This #AbandonBiden 2024 conference is set against the backdrop of the upcoming 2024 presidential election and the decision to withdraw support for President Biden due to his unwillingness to call for a ceasefire and protect innocents in Palestine and Israel,” the group told Axios in a statement.
“Leaders from swing states will work together to guarantee Biden’s loss in the 2024 election,” it added.
Muslim American figures have been warning for almost as long as the war has been underway that Biden’s support for Israel could cost him support in 2024.
Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) has been the most vocal Muslim American in Congress critical of Biden, saying he is complicit in war crimes. On Oct. 17, she said his approach to the war has “opened my eyes” in a post falsely blaming Israel for bombing a Gaza hospital.
