‘This is student housing’ — Tent makes statement for new leader at Seattle Central College

A tent marked as “Student Housing” on the sidewalk along Broadway outside Seattle Central College is drawing attention.

“On Broadway outside the main entrance of Seattle Central College, there is a tent that popped up over the weekend. It’s maroon and spray painted in yellow on its sides, it says ‘This is student housing. I am a student,’ the SCC faculty member who sent CHS the picture writes.

This student shouldn’t be bothered, of course, but their tent is such a statement on the reality that many of our students face. (I’m an SCC faculty member.) Actual student housing at SCC is in the long-term plan, but that’s years from now if it does actually happen.

The tent and its message have greeted the new interim president at SCC.

Former Seattle Public Schools superintendent Brent Jones was selected to head the school while the search for a permanent replacement plays out.

The Capitol Hill college’s previous interim president Chantae Recanser is taking a new job leading Bremerton’s Olympic College.

The shift in leadership at SCC comes as budget woes have the school considering selling off its Wood Technology Center property in the Central District. Meanwhile, SCC continues to search for a long-term tenant to re-activate the Egyptian Theatre.

As for SCC student housing, CHS reported here in 2022 on plans for the school to someday replace its massive parking structure at Pine and Harvard with more than 500 beds of student housing. The garage would be demolished and rebuilt with about 260 parking spots, which would include charging stations for electric bikes and cars, and the housing built above.
