Shikorina Bakeshop says Capitol Hill move hasn’t worked out
Community support helped Hana Yohannes move her Shikorina Bakeshop and Cafe to Capitol Hill two years ago.
Now, she’s letting the community and Shikorina customers know E Pike isn’t working out.
“After two years of trying to make this new location work, I’ve made the decision to close Shikorina once we find someone to take over the space,” the announcement reads. “While we experienced incredible success and momentum in the Central District, this new location hasn’t unfolded in the same way.”
CHS reported here in 2024 as Yohannes and Shikorina settled into Pike/Pine after a move from the Central District. The change was an opportunity to leave lease, financial, and personal challenges behind, Yohannes said at the time.
The effort has apparently not resulted in the fresh start that had been hoped for.
“This hasn’t been an easy decision, but it’s one that comes from being honest about what’s sustainable and I’m looking ahead with positivity and openness to whatever the next chapter holds,” Yohannes writes.
If you’re interesting in giving it a go at 907 E Pike, the space got a few upgrades a few years back before the exit of Portland vegan Jewish deli chain Ben and Esther’s.
For now, Yohannes says Shikorina will remain open with cakes, pop tarts, cookies, baked goods, coffee, and tea until she finds someone to take over the space.
