WEST SEATTLE WEATHER: Major power outage – thousands out, trees and wires down

8:44 PM: Hasn’t hit the City Light map just yet but we’re getting power outage reports from Arbor Heights.

8:46 PM: It’s on the map now – almost 5,000 customers out. 911 is getting calls from people who heard a transformer/fuse blow. This happened during a burst of strong wind and rain.

9:45 PM: Huge apologies for the hourlong gap. We lost power (and are still out) here in Upper Fauntleroy, but we have ample backups for power and internet – unfortunately the server – which is NOT physically nearby – crashed too.

We’ve continued monitoring police radio and suffice it to say, it’s dangerous out there – closed streets with wires and/or trees down – though the weather has calmed somewhat, that huge blast a little over an hour ago is all it took to knock tens of thousands out here and elsewhere.

9:54 PM: Avalon and West Marginal are among the arterials with tree trouble. For Avalon, texter says “The road is taped off and blocked in front of Luna Park Café.” Newest wired-down call is in North Admiral, 46th and Massachusetts.

10:06 PM: City Light is making some progress – the total number out in their service area has dropped from the 40,000s to the 30,000s.
